The benefits of being a professional student

Not long ago, perpetually being in college (being a professional student) was considered to be a lame way to be a bum most of your life. Nowadays, however, continuing education is imperative to success. That’s true whether you’re running your own business or working for a paycheck. Our society these days seems to revolve completely around the latest, greatest, newest, ever-changing way we do things, think about things, solve problems, and even manage our day-to-day lives.

As such, I’m always looking for learning opportunities to expand my skills and broaden my critical thinking abilities. Sometimes that might just be a training course specifically designed for small business owners, or service professionals, or what-have-you. (Last year I took several business-building seminars, for example.) However, I also seek out traditional education as well. There’s no such thing, in my opinion, as being overly educated.

In fact, this year I decided to seek my 2nd Bachelor’s degree. This degree is my Accounting degree. Eventually, I will go on to seek my Masters and possibly even a PhD - if time and ability allow it. :) I love education. I love always learning something I didn’t know before. I hunger for it almost as much as I do working with my clients. It’s a necessary part of the person I am.

I’m happy to say that today marks the last day of my first term back in school. Final grades were posted just this morning, and quite happily, I learned that not only did I make Dean’s List but I made the Chancellor’s List as well. (The Dean’s List spotlights students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, whereas the Chancellor’s List spotlights students with a 4.0 GPA.) One term down, nine more to go! (Each term lasts approximately 6-8 weeks…my expected graduation date for this degree is June of 2009…just a short year away.)

I’m so tickled! I had to share and take a second to brag a moment. Maintaining a 4.0 GPA while juggling a business with multiple clients, family commitments, and a host of personal challenges is by no means an easy task. But I’m always up for a good challenge.

What challenge are you going to take on?
